An Athletic Tradition with Class

Pasco-Hernando State College launched its intercollegiate athletics program in 1991.  Then President, Dr. Milton O. Jones recruited Coach Bobby Bowman from the University of South Florida as the athletic director for the college’s new competitive program. Bowman also took on the role of head coach for men’s basketball.

PHSC’s Athletic Director Emeritus Bobby Bowman maximized the opportunity in 1991 to create, and develop over a quarter century, a nationally respected and competitive community college intercollegiate athletics program.  Bowman’s main goal was to hire good, quality people and new coaches, who would work as a team and support the mission to build a competitive program with class.

Also in 1991, Steve Winterling, then assistant coach at Florida State University, was recruited as PHSC’s head baseball coach. “I remember building the baseball field—from clearing the land and building dug-outs to chalking lines on the field,” said Winterling, who took the baseball program from infancy to the state finals in just three seasons. Winterling is the current PHSC athletic director.

Tom Ryan, current women’s softball head coach, was hired in 1994 to launch the women’s fastpitch softball program—a move in line with the state of Florida and the NJCAA to switch from soft pitch to fast pitch. Women’s volleyball and tennis completed PHSC’s five-sport athletics program. In 2005, cross country replaced the women’s tennis program. PHSC was the first college in the state to offer cross country.

Bowman shifted the athletics program from Division I to Division II status in an effort to open additional opportunities for local athletes and save costs in 2010. From day one, part of its mission was to recruit the best student-athletes from Pasco and Hernando counties.  Today, PHSC is host to over 30 local student athletes within the athletic program.

In 2016, PHSC Athletics celebrated 25 years of remarkable success—accomplished in a relatively short history.
