February 6, 2019 - Louise Downey was recently named 2018-2019 Mentor of the Year by PHSC Take Stock in Children (TSIC) for Hernando County. Downey, PHSC academic success center coordinator at the PHSC North Campus, was also considered for TSIC Statewide Mentor of the Year. This is her second year as a mentor. Downey meets with her mentee Mianicia Anderson approximately one hour per week during school hours at the mentee’s school.

“Louise possesses the passion and understanding necessary for a mentor and gets the job done,” said Ronteryl Black, pre-collegiate program coordinator at PHSC. Each year TSIC Hernando selects a mentor who has gone above and beyond the call of duty to ensure that mentees stay on the path towards a successful future.

The college’s TSIC  program for Hernando County is an award winning pre-collegiate, drop-out prevention program, providing scholarships, mentors, and hope to deserving children who are academically qualified but considered ‘at-risk.’ Currently the college’s TSIC currently serves 36 students enrolled in its program.

The school-based mentoring organization has positively impacted the lives of more than 24,000 children throughout Florida since its inception in 1995.
